The last thing you may feel like doing when experiencing diarrhea is to eat or drink anything. However, it's important to keep adequate amounts of fluids in your body. Dehydration can happen quickly if diarrhea is severe. Water is always important to drink. Other fluids can include clear broth, apple juice, electrolyte replacement drinks, popsicles, etc. (Avoid the latter two if you have diabetes.) Drink what your oncology nurse or physician recommends.
Eat frequent, small meals. Avoid foods that can irritate your digestive tract, such as dairy products, caffeine, spicy foods, and foods high in fat or fiber. If your oncologist recommends it, include foods that boost your potassium level, such as bananas, potatoes, and apricots. NOTE: If you have kidney problems, consult your doctor before eating foods high in potassium.
As your diarrhea lessens, slowly start reintroducing items from your normal diet, according to your physician's recommendation.
