Caregiver Tips

If you are an caregiver for a loved one who has lymphedema, be aware that the condition can cause a significant change in your loved one's quality of life. Physical changes in the body, self-image issues, and struggles with a regimen for controlling lymphedema can take a toll on your loved one. You may notice that the person doesn't want to go out socially or engage in previous activities, even when cleared medically to do so. Be supportive and encouraging, but don't force your loved one into an uncomfortable position.

Perhaps your loved one may need to buy loose-fitting shoes or clothes-perhaps a different style that can be put on more easily than what he or she currently owns. Depending on your loved one's overall health and stamina, suggest accompanying him or her on a shopping outing.

Most of all, keep looking upon your loved one as the same person you've always known. Having cancer and lymphedema is only one small part of his or her life.
