Many patients are able to continue working during cancer treatments. However, each patient is different. You will experience side effects such as fatigue and cognitive dysfunction (lack of concentration) that can make performing your job difficult.
You may want to discuss temporary changes in your work responsibilities with your employer, such as reductions in physical labor or travel during your cancer treatments. If your employer has 15 or more full-time workers, you also are eligible for benefits under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
In the event that you cannot continue working, you should be familiar with the conditions of any short-term disability insurance, long-term disability insurance, or government assistance available to provide financial support to you and your dependents during your cancer experience.
Don't isolate yourself from others. Be sure to talk to your employer and coworkers about your diagnosis.
