How to Talk With Your Employer

Cancer-related side effects, such as fatigue, can affect your ability to work. Talk with your employer about your workload and your limitations. Express your desire to continue working in a supportive environment.

Here are some tips for talking to your employer.

  • Work with your employer to set realistic goals for yourself during and after treatment.
  • If needed, ask for scheduling flexibility or modifications in your job responsibilities to take advantage of your peak energy times.
  • Communicate openly with your employer and colleagues about issues such as fatigue and treatment times.
  • Don't feel embarrassed to ask for help.
  • Eat regularly, drink fluids, and exercise moderately to maintain energy throughout the workday.
  • Know your company's policies regarding sick leave, disability leave, and scheduling options.
  • Familiarize yourself with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) so that you understand your rights as an employee.
  • If needed, encourage your employer to consult the Job Accommodation Network at +1-800-ADA-WORK (+1-800-232-9675). This is a free service that helps employers work out special arrangements for employees who need them.
