How to Talk With Your Family

Talking with your family about your illness can be difficult; talking about your wishes or needs can be even harder. You may feel guilty for having the spotlight on you at the expense of other family members' needs or for putting your family through "so much." However, you should talk with your family. You, the patient, understand how you feel and what you're going through because you are living it each day. Your family members can only guess at how you're feeling-and sometimes their imaginations can run away with them.

Here are some tips for talking with your family.

  • Ask your doctor for advice on the best way to explain your condition.
  • Talk to your family, including your children. How much you tell them about your condition depends on your child's age, maturity, and how much you feel he or she can handle.
  • Offer reassurance. Your family members are concerned how your life will change as well as theirs.
  • Be honest but positive. Let your family know that you will keep them in the loop if circumstances change.
  • Explain what you can and cannot do for yourself and why.
  • Ask for help. For example, if your medical bills are confusing, ask your family to help you sort them out.

If needed, discuss legal issues with adult family members-but talk with your healthcare providers first.
